He has spent his internship at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA, and his residencies at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, MI and Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit. He has practiced radiology at Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Michigan, the United States and is associated with multiple hospitals in Michigan including Harbor Beach Community Hospital and Genesys Regional Medical Center.

As a radiologist, Apparao Mukkamala performs the following responsibilities

• After he receives a patient, he tries to diagnose the patient’s illness by using a variety of high-tech tools. All these  All of advanced imaging tools allow the radiologist to get a good view of what is at present occurring within a patient’s body so that a proper diagnosis can be made
• After he receives the results of the tests he forwards them to the physician and shares a report on his findings. On the basis of these reports, the doctor decides the next course of action for the patient.
• At times, Dr. Mukkamala also performs an important part in patient’s treatment. This may include collaborating with other medical professionals and the primary physician on medicines and therapies. In case of diseases like cancer where chemotherapy and radiation treatments are used, he as a radiologist work with techs and other radiology team members to administer the treatments.

He has founded Chinmaya Vijaya Orphanage that offers shelter, food, health care, and education for orphans and has also founded NRI Academy of Sciences. NRI Academy of Sciences has 950-bed general hospital and accommodates the NRI Heart and Research Center that treats a range of cardiovascular diseases. He has received a number of awards and recognitions for his contribution towards community such as the Rotary Foundation International Award, the Mother India International Award and the Clement A. Alfred Humanitarian Award. He has  also received Dr. Nathan Davis International Award for his mind- blowing contribution to field of medicine and Medical Education. Dr. Mukkamala has also received the State of Michigan Distinguished Citizen Award.
